Enterprise UI/UX Design (Defense)

Interface and visual design for mission-critical systems supporting defense and aerospace contractors such as Boeing and Intergraph

NOTE:

If you work in the industry, you won't be surprised to hear that I can’t actually show this work.
I asked nicely. They said no.

Still, I believe these 15 years of work deserve representation,
so I thought I'd have a little fun...

Custom Web Apps

I led UI/UX design on more than 20 custom-built .NET web apps at ******, balancing the unique requirements and challenges of each app with core UI/UX concerns such as responsive design, accessibility, and browser compatibility, while creatively adapting existing brand standards.

These apps ranged from massive, information-rich dashboards to innovative timeline visualization tools to employee travel management systems — basically, if they had a need, we could build a tool for it.

Below are just a few examples of some of my favorites:

For some projects — such as the **** app's ************* tool (pictured above, top) — I had to push the limits of what I thought possible with CSS at the time (before the grid layout module became widely supported, at least). I built a highly complex “mega table” to visualize large amounts of schedule data, using multiple overlapping layers of rows and columns inside a labyrinth of collapsible table bodies and interactive elements.

The ********** dashboard (pictured below, bottom left) also presented many significant UI challenges, such as how to fit so much information on the page while keeping it gracefully responsive (without scrollbars!), how to implement all of the symbol- and color-based statuses in a way that was semantically logical and accessible for non-sighted users, and many more. It was also easily my favorite long-term project at ******, because the uniqueness and complexity of the interfaces meant that we had to design it all from scratch, without the aid (or limitations) of the frameworks and paradigms we were used to, so it gave us a chance to go a little crazy and be extra creative. Along those same lines, it was also rich with opportunities for subtle animation embellishments.

SharePoint Themes

SharePoint served as a critical collaboration tool at both ****** and **********, and I partnered with developers to design and maintain custom, graphically rich themes that improved usability, elevated visual appeal, and reinforced brand identity.

Splash Pages

Some SharePoint team sites called for extra creative attention, so I partnered with team leaders to design custom, visually engaging splash pages that acted as distinctive gateways into their sites, highlighting key information like leadership and contact details while reflecting a bit of the "flavor" of each team's role and identity.

One of my favorite projects was the stylized intercept imagery for the *** ******* page, which we ended up tweaking and repurposing for so many other uses over the years that it effectively became part of the unofficial visual brand for our own *** ***** developer team.

I also enjoyed creating the stark visuals of the *** silhouetted against the starry horizon; the leader of that team liked it enough to request that I adapt it into a desktop wallpaper he could use. Other splash page designs gave us the chance to use unexpected pops of color to better identify certain teams and differentiate them — using colors drawn from ******’s rich set of approved accent colors — providing valuable breaks from the monotonous color palettes that often dominate these spaces.

Jared’s greatest ability is being able to start with a vision requirement and refine the intent into a clear solution, which anticipated and exceeded the user's expectations.

...and Much More

I also designed many logos and icons and provided photo editing and other visual support to meet a wide range of design needs in the course of this defense work.

And while I know these blurred images and redactions may be wearing thin at this point, suffice it to say that during my 15 years supporting Boeing through TGI, our team was awarded the Boeing Performance Excellence Award over a dozen times.

I may not be able to display any of it here,
but I'm proud of the work we did.
